Vacation Bible School has begun

and I've learned a few things.

  • It ain't what it used to be. In my VBS days, we sang songs like "Jesus Loves Me" and we ran through the sprinklers. Today, we sang songs I've never heard on a video while doing cheesy hand motions that moved too fast for the 4-5 year olds I had with me. But they loved to just dance to their own beat.
  • I'm not sure where the word "vacation" fits into the whole thing because there is nothing relaxing or vacation like about it. At least, for the adults.
  • 4 1/2 year olds ask just as many questions as 3 1/2 year olds. And also wait until the last moment to tell me they have to potty.
  • Boys are different than girls. Boys can turn a fairly innocuous beaker into a laser and begin to shoot at each other in less than 5 seconds. Girls can revel in the beauty of the craft and dutifully use the scissors to cut open their glitter and then carefully pour the glitter into their beaker. While the boys continue to shoot each other with their "laser".
  • Kids love to yell on cue. The louder the better, and especially if they are inside. They'll actually giggle with the joy of being able to yell inside.
  • Being a VBS teacher rocks. I'm actually a little bummed I'm only working Mon. Wed. Fri. because a few of my kids were unsure about meeting a new teacher tomorrow. Grant, on the other hand, will be glad to not spend the morning in the nursery 5 days in a row. Next year, right?
